On 14 January the European Court of Human Rights called upon the Ukrainian authorities not to extradite an ethnic Chechen man, Ahmed Chataev, to Russia until further notice. Read more »

China - Man Faces Death Penalty

A Chinese man, Gan Jinhua, has lost an appeal against a death sentence which he claims is a result of a confession extracted through torture. The Supreme People's Court (SPC) in Beijing is now reviewing his sentence. If the SPC approves the death sentence, he could be executed within a week. Read more »

Mexico - Three People Unlawfully Arrested

The army arrested three people in northern Mexico, for reasons unclear, on 29 December. Their fate and whereabouts are unknown and they may have been subjected to enforced disappearance. Human rights defenders working on their behalf may also be at risk, as another activist working on abuses by the military was murdered on 3 January. Read more »

Two women, Leily Afshar and Atieh Yousefi, and one man, Reza al-Basha, are among hundreds of people believed to be held incommunicado following mass arrests on 27 and 28 December 2009, around the Shi’a Muslim holy day of Ashoura. Prominent Iranian Journalist and human rights defender Emadeddin Baghi was arrested on December 28, 2009, Amnesty International is concerned that he could be subjected to ill-treatment and medical neglect while in detention. Read more »
