Turkey - Enver Adyemir
Following a military court hearing on 21 January, Turkish conscientious objector Enver Aydemir will have to appear before a higher court. He remains unlawfully detained in a military prison.
25 January 2010 Vecdi Gonul Minister of National Defense Milli Savunma Bakanligi 06100 Ankara, TURKEY Dear Minister: I am writing you today to express my concern for the safety of Enver Aydemir, who is being unlawfully detained in a military prison. The right of a citzen to conscienciously refuse military service is an garenteed by the International Covenant on Civil and political rights, to which Turkey is a state party. I urge you to release Mr. Aydemir immediately and unconditionally from detention and ensure that he is not subjected to torture or ill-treatment. I ask that that he be allowed an independant medical examinationa and access to any medical attention that he may need. Finally, I am doubly concerned about the procecution of nineteen supporters of Mr. Aydemir. Surpressing their political speech is in direct violation of international standards.
