Ukraine - Ahmed Chataev
On 14 January the European Court of Human Rights called upon the Ukrainian authorities not to extradite an ethnic Chechen man, Ahmed Chataev, to Russia until further notice.
25 January 2010 Oleksandr Medvedko vul. riznitska 13/15 01601 Kyiv UKRAINE Dear Prosecutor General: I am writing you today to reiterate my concern for the welfare of Ahmed Chataev, who was to be extradited to Russia. I urge you to comply with your obligations as a state party to the 1951 Refugee Convention and UN Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or degrading Treatment of Punishment and not extradite Mr. Chataev to a country where he faces the real, documented possibility of ill- treatment or the death penalty. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that you not return Mr. Chataev and I urge you strongly to comply with this ruling. Thank you for your time in this urgent matter. Yours Sincerely, Shawn Nock
